Thomas Detry leads Cantlay by one shot at AT & T Pebble Pro-Am

Patrick Cantlay, who is on the PGA TOUR Policy Board, has had a hectic week. But it didn’t appear to have an impact on his day job at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Cantlay scored eight birdies and saved par five times at Spyglass Hill Golf Course for an 8-under 64 total that put him one stroke behind Belgian Thomas Detry on an unexpected day when umbrellas gave way to sunglasses.

On an unexpected day when umbrellas gave way to sunglasses, Cantlay shot eight birdies and saved par five times at Spyglass Hill Golf Course for an 8-under 64 total that left him one stroke behind Belgian Thomas Detry.

After five birdies in seven holes, Rory McIlroy was among the leaders at 6-under, but his back nine was derailed when he three-putted for bogey and then took a costly two-stroke penalty.

The eighty-man field, the strongest and smallest for the now-famous Pebble Beach event with a $20 million purse, was largely relieved not to get soaked by a prediction that called for additional rain to be added to the 1.5 inches that had fallen overnight.

After a week of golfers being allowed to lift, clean, and place their golf balls in the short grass, Detry had ten birdies by keeping the ball in play off the tee. Certainly, the chip-in was helpful.

“I was fairly at ease. To be honest, I would say it’s within three feet. It trickled into the hole and rolled smoothly. It was a pleasure to observe.” Detry said.

As one of the six Player Directors on the PGA TOUR Policy Board, Cantlay has played a pivotal role in the agreement that was reached Tuesday night for a $3 billion investment that includes player equity participation and the establishment of PGA TOUR Enterprises.

“You need to compartmentalize, in my opinion. It’s imperative that you maintain maximum concentration while performing your tasks. With all the distractions, it could be a little more difficult, but I’m determined to focus as hard as I can on the current work. And I believe I performed that well today at Spyglass.” Cantlay said.

Rickie Fowler’s season has started off on quite the roller coaster. At The Sentry, he placed towards the back of the pack and failed to make the cut at The American Express. He recovered at Spyglass Hill, shooting a 67.
