Dahmen tops leaderboard with others at Wyndham Championship

Joel Dahmen matched his career-best 9-under 61 on Thursday, closing with three consecutive birdies to take a one-shot lead over Alex Noren in the Wyndham Championship and begin his long-shot attempt to qualify for the PGA TOUR postseason.

At the Wyndham Championship, the Regular Season comes to a close. The top 70 players in the FedExCup go on to the prize-rich postseason.

To make it to the FedExCup Playoffs, Dahmen ; who is now ranked 101st ; would have to finish in second place with no more than two other competitors.

He was optimistic about his prospects of competing in next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship and pleased with his start ; ten birdies on a dry course at Sedgefield.

Out of 231 tournaments, he has won once and finished second three times.

“In my professional life, I’ve had, like, 3 top 2s—4, perhaps? It’s not even a thing, after all. Yes, it would be amazing to make the playoffs. Please give me plenty of time off this fall. That would be less stressful because we are expecting a baby.

For me, the playoffs are an added benefit. All I’m going to do is go out and try to play golf; if I do well, I suppose I’ll get to play again next week.

Additionally, Dahmen shot 61 in the 2020 RSM Classic second round.” He said.

Even with a victory, Noren cannot make it to the postseason after missing six months due to a hamstring issue. Mark Hubbard, who is ranked No. 98 and would also need to finish second, was one of the four players at 63.

Cameron Young, Aaron Rai, the reigning champion, and Nico Echavarria, who must maintain his position at No. 65, joined Hubbard.

“It really depends on your perspective, in my opinion. Since it’s incredibly difficult to achieve that and you’re not really thinking about it ; I just need to go play really well and make a ton of birdies ; I feel like that relieves some of the burden. It’s fantastic if that turns out to be how it should be.” Hubbard said.

It’s easier, in my opinion, than if I had to place in the top 15 or top 10, since you’re constantly watching the board. This week, all I have to do is play to the best of my abilities.

Despite having distinct goals this week, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott finished with the same score of 65. Spieth finished his final five holes with four birdies. He hopes to relieve some of the strain when he arrives in Memphis, Tennessee, even though he is scheduled to start the postseason at No. 50.

The top 50 after the first FedExCup Playoffs event not only progress to the next week, but they are assured to get in all the $20 million Signature Events. Spieth missed out last year, then underwent wrist surgery, and had to petition for exemptions into the Signature Events.

But at No. 85, Scott would need to finish at least third in order to qualify for the postseason.

“I had best not be under 1 through day one or I’m going to leave myself with a lot of work since I’m going to need to get like 20 under to think of anything. Making a few of birdies is very pleasant. Of course, I would like to win this event even though I consider moving on.” Scott said.

The first FedExCup bonus pool is also up for grabs this week ; Scottie Scheffler, who leads the points with $10 million, and Rory McIlroy, who is in second place with $4 million, have both finished.

If he can maintain his position at No. 10, Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley would receive a $500,000 payout. Bradley finished with a 68 after bogeying his final two holes.

He played alongside Ryder Cup hopefuls Andrew Novak (68) and Ben Griffin (67).
