During his Rookie of the Year campaign last year, Cameron Young finished five games in second place. He was unable to get a win.
This year, at the World Golf Championships Dell Technologies Match Play final, he fell short against Sam Burns, and he is constantly reminded that he has yet to win on the PGA TOUR.
As regards his patience level towards this, he said ;
“I believe that for a while, I had run out of patience. I think I’ve accepted the fact that I’ve played a lot of golf here that is good enough to win a tournament.” At the World Wide Technology Championship in Los Cabos, Mexico, on Thursday morning, Young stated that he was one back following the morning session after shooting a bogey-free 65 in comparatively quiet circumstances.
“Granted, things haven’t quite gone that way so far, but I feel like I’ve played some excellent golf and I really believe that golf can win a tournament here. I’ve therefore begun to let go of it a little bit and am now much more committed to making the greatest progress possible,” he said.
Consequently, Young, who was positioned 17th in the field at El Cardonal, started an extended vacation after placing T15 at the BMW Championship on 20 August. It had been a rather trying season for him as he struggled on the greens, finishing 149th in Strokes Gained: Putting, and just missed making the U.S. Ryder Cup Team, despite having done enough to qualify for the Signature Events for 2024.
In addition, this week Young is substituting David Cooke, Adam Schenk’s regular bagman, for Paul Tesori, who had suggested Cooke. Young’s ball-striking on Thursday paid off handsomely; with a few more made putts, his score could have been considerably closer to 10 under.
Not that he voiced grievances.
“In actuality, my family and I have been at home. I’ve practiced steadily every day, not for endless hours at a time. It was a pleasant opportunity for me to work on some mechanical projects because I hadn’t had the chance to do it in a few years.” Young said.
Additionally, he was still savoring the experience of performing in the Wednesday pro-am alongside a worldwide music icon.
To be honest, I didn’t realize I was playing with him. When I read his name on the scorecard, I assumed it had to be Justin Timberlake from somewhere else, but it wasn’t. It’s a blast playing with him. He’s a decent golfer; I believe he mentioned that he’s occasionally gotten close to the hole, and you can understand why. He delivers powerful shots. Yes, it was a lot of fun to play with him, and we had a great time.
One could argue that the pairing was successful on its own.
