Jordan Spieth makes unexpected Putter Change at WM Phoenix Open

One piece of Jordan Spieth’s equipment configuration that is rarely altered was his putter, which he formally changed.

When he wasn’t utilising his go-to Scotty Cameron putter, the 13-time PGA TOUR winner and 2015 FedExCup champion shocked the golf world by shooting 3-under 68 in the first round of the WM Phoenix Open. At TPC Scottsdale, Spieth instead made his debut with a T.P. Mills blade putter.

Jordan Spieth, a youth golfer, was fitted into a Scotty Cameron 009 triple black putter during a 2009 visit to the Scotty Cameron putter gallery. Spieth used that putter to win The Open Championship in 2017, the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open, and the U.S. Junior championships in 2009 and 2011. Throughout his career, the 009 has been a staple in his bag, with the exception of a few short periods with other putters.

However, Spieth pulled a T.P. Mills Trad II putter from his home club collection for Thursday’s 2025 WM Phoenix Open. Similar to his long-time gamer, the T.P. Mills putter has a plumber’s neck hosel design, a SuperStroke grip putter, a raw appearance, and carbon construction for a soft feel. Highlighting the putter swap was a 56-foot birdie on his 15th hole of the day, which put him two strokes behind Speith’s good buddy Justin Thomas and Nicolai Højgaard’s early clubhouse lead.

After his opening round at the WM Phoenix Open, Spieth stated, “I have a few options, just trying to mess a little with how it sits on the ground, the draft on the bottom of the putter, see if I can get it to set aligning a little better and off the ball is a little bit smoother. I might make use of a couple choices. I might continue with the one I completed today. Let’s see.”

According to on-site sources, the T.P. Mills putter differs primarily in that it has a lower loft. The T.P. Mills putter measures between 2.5 and 3 degrees, while his long-time gamer measures almost 4 degrees.

Spieth was positive for Strokes Gained: Putting at the end of his round.

If you are unfamiliar with the name T.P. Mills, Truett P. Mills Sr. launched the business in 1963, and it has been producing high-end putters ever since. “Playable Works of Art” is how T.P. Mills refers to its putters.

We’re monitoring this putter switch going forward, but it’s unclear if it’s a temporary disruption or a long-term shift.

“I threatened to switch putters last year, but I never did. I was experimenting with other alternatives, different heads, and other things. In 2017, I used a mallet-style putter. I’ll utilise that one as I’m simply trying to determine what makes it easier for me to stroke.” Spieth Mentioned.
