This week’s J.T. Poston travel contingent is both larger and louder than usual.
For the first time, the Postons travelled with their newborn daughter, Scottie. She is already demonstrating her charm for good fortune. Poston’s opening-round 8-under 63 puts him 2 shots ahead of the field in the RBC Heritage.
“It’s been fantastic. It is undoubtedly a change. My wife and I were probably working it out. My mother is present. She is also assisting us. Thus, we have a lot of support. Kind of like we’re working it out.” Poston said.
Three days following THE PLAYERS Championship final round, on March 20, Katherine “Scottie” Poston was born (Scottie is a family name on both sides). After taking a break for three weeks, Poston went to the Masters by himself. Approximately two hours away from the Postons’ St. Simons residence, this week’s RBC Heritage offered the perfect setting for a family get-together.
“Our condo has two bedrooms. We are hosting my mother. We have (Scottie) in her compact arrangement. My wife was excellent last night; she let me sleep even though she woke up a few times in the middle of the night to eat or because she was fussy. Maybe we should continue doing that.” Poston said.
They should stick to their current schedule. Poston shot a 30-minute round on Thursday and made 9 birdies, 6 of which came on the front 9. Poston’s lone bogey of the day at No. 12 was more than countered by 3 more on the back. Poston finished second in Putting and first in SG: Around the Green.
“It seemed like one of those days when, if I could just look at myself, I would feel pretty good about my ability to make putts, no matter how long or how close they were. You could say that it allowed the tee to green a little bit.” Poston said.
In recent weeks, Poston has experienced problems with the tee-to-green game. Poston hasn’t placed in the top 25 since the PGA TOUR moved away from the West Coast, despite finishing in the top 10 in three of his first six events and the top 20 in two more. Poston attributed the current difficulties to the ups and downs of a particular season. He remarked, “It’s hard to hit it really good every week.”
Maybe Scottie holds the secret. Poston is currently leading at Harbour Town Golf Links after finishing T30 at the Masters, his highest finish in the previous two months.
“That might be related in some way. Having them here relieves some of the strain since I don’t have to think about golf when I’m at home. I’m attempting to tend to her needs and change her diapers.” he said.
